Reading Gate offers a variety of contents for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students to learn English online effectively. Reading Gate's contents are organized as follows.
DODO ABC (PreK) Students who are learning English for the first time can start here by learning the alphabet, phonics, and sight words through fun activities, exercises, and videos.
eBook Reading Gate's eBook library consists of internationally renowned and award-winning titles as well as popular Korean children's stories retold in English. Students can readily access these eBooks through the Reading Gate platform. Additionally, every eBook comes with an audio recording featuring professional native English voice actors, so students can listen and follow along to their favorite eBooks. After reading, students can complete a quiz to test their understanding of the story.
pBook Quizzes pBook Quizzes is where students can find and complete a quiz for many of the world's most popular book series. Please note that only the quiz is available on the Reading Gate platform, not the actual book.
Movie Books Some of our eBooks have been turned into short animated movies for a more fun and engaging learning experience.
The Reading Gate program consists of 22 levels, and the breakdown for each level is provided in the chart below. Please keep in mind that these are general standards. Because of individual differences, it is recommended that you start with the Reading Level that matches your skillset.
After logging in to Reading Gate, click on the [Go to Study] button. Then, click on [My Info], which is located at the top of the page. Finally, click [Level Test].
After entering your age and previous English learning experience, you will be given a Level Test that is appropriate for you. Once you have finished the Level Test, a pop-up window will display your recommended Reading Level.
The Level Test can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. If you stop during the middle of the test, you will need to start over from the beginning. So please set aside enough time to complete the test in one sitting.
You do not need to take the Level Test. You can open and read any book in the library regardless of your Reading Level. If you find a level that you think is appropriate for you, you can then set your Reading Level manually.
Can I read books that are not in my Reading Level?
Yes, you can read any book in the library regardless of your Reading Level. Your Reading Level is only a guide to help you choose books that may be best suited for your skillset.
If you find yourself thinking that the books at your current Reading Level are too easy or too hard, you can freely adjust your Reading Level.
Whether or not you have taken the Level Test, every book in the library is available for you to read and take the quiz.
When you first subscribe to Reading Gate, you will be able to take the Level Test twice at your own convenience. After completing the Level Test for the second time, you will only be able to retake the test once every six months (180 days). If you'd like to retake the test within the six-month period, please contact Reading Gate's Customer Center at 1599-0533.
To start using Reading Gate, it is important to find books that match your reading skills. There are two ways to determine your Reading Level. First, browse through Reading Gate's library and read books from various levels to find out which level best fits you.
The second way to determine your Reading Level is by taking Reading Gate's Level Test. You can take the Level Test by going to the [My Info] menu and clicking on the [Level Test] button.
For more information on finding the right Reading Level for you, watch the Level Selection Guide video located in your [Reading Profile] page under the [My Info] menu.
In addition, if there is a specific book that you are looking for, you can find it by using the [Search] feature in the [Book Finder] menu and entering the title of the book you are looking for.
What is the difference between DODO ABC and the other Reading Levels?
DODO ABC is for first-time English learners, as it covers the basics of English such as the alphabet, phonics, and sight words.
Reading Levels K through 6 are for students who have already learned the basics of the English language and are already able to read. These books are organized by level with each book having a quiz.
Is there a limit to how many books I can read per day?
No. There is no limit on the number of books you can read per day. There is, however, a limit on the number of Reading Points that can be earned in a day. To avoid excessive competition, readers can only
accumulate a maximum of 150 points per day. If a student reaches 150 points in a day, they will no longer be able to take a Book Quiz for the rest of that day.
※If you have earned 149 points in a day, you will be able to earn the full points from one more quiz. If you have earned 150 points in a day, you will not be able to complete any more quizzes for that day.
How many times can I complete a quiz to earn Reading Points?
Reading Points from quiz can only be earned twice. After successfully earning Reading Points both times, the book can be read again through Review mode. Please note that in Review mode, students will not be able to earn Reading Points after completing the quiz.
- How to Review: Click [Details] of the book to review in [Report > Study History], and then click [Review].
※ How to access Review mode: Click on the [Reports] menu, then [My Report]. Then click on the book that you wish to review and click [Review].
※ If you fail a quiz, it will not count as one of the two times you can earn Reading Points.
※ Activities in the DODO ABC program can be completed more than two times.
You can find the correct answers by going to the [Reports] menu and clicking on [My Report]. Then, under the [Assessment] tab, click on the book that you wish to review. Finally, click [Review].
Correct answers will only be available for quizzes that have been passed.
※ Quiz review is not available for books that had been completed more than 6 months ago.
※ Answers are not saved during Review mode.
No. Reading history cannot be deleted or reset. It is a cumulative record of all of the books you have passed or failed.
※ Pass/Fail: A score of 70 or higher on a quiz is considered a Pass. A score lower than 70 is considered a Fail.
Yes. Reports can be printed by going to the [Reports] menu, and clicking on [My Report]. Then, under the [Assessment] tab, click on the book you want to see the report on. A pop up will appear, then press [Reports].
To find books during a specific time period, you can set the time period by clicking on the dates located above the [Assessment] tab.
What is the Listen & Repeat feature that is available for eBooks leveled KA~KC?
The Listen & Repeat feature is only for students at lower levels (eBook Levels KA to KC) to ensure more effective reading. The stories are automatically played twice before you can move on to the quiz.
During the first read, the eBook will be played as normal. After finishing the story, the eBook will return to the first page to start the Listen & Repeat portion. During this portion, a short pause is given between the reading of each sentence to allow students to repeat the sentence they just heard.
Why are there two different modes (Full and Easy) starting from Level 2?
Quizzes starting at Level 2 begin to incorporate typing activities in Steps 2 and 4 to further reinforce learning and understanding.
Because these typing activities take more time to complete, they are only included in the Full Mode, which includes all the quiz steps from 1 to 4. Easy Mode, however, does not include the typing activities and only include steps 1 and 3 of the quiz.
Full and Easy Modes may only be completed once each for every book. For Full Mode, 100% of the Reading Points can be earned, while only 50% of the total Reading Points can be earned for Easy Mode.
※ Reading Points: Reading Points are earned after receiving a Pass on a quiz. The number of Reading Points that can be earned for each book can be found on book's cover or its Book Info page.
※ Pass: A grade of Pass is given if the average score of all the steps on the quiz is greater than 70.
Once you have reached the set number of points for each level, you will be automatically Leveled Up. To check the points needed to Level Up for each level, go to the [Reports], then click on [My Progress].
※ Contents for all levels can be accessed regardless of your Reading Level.
※ Leveling Up means to improve your Reading Level.
※ It is possible to Level Up more than one level (e.g., if your current Reading Level is KC, but you read and complete quizzes from Level 1C and have earned more than 1000 points, you will automatically be Leveled Up to 2A).
A book's Reading Point is calculated by taking into account its difficulty level, word count, ATOS Level, and other variables. The Reading Point for each book can be found on the book's cover or on its Book Info page. Reading Points can only be earned if an average score of all the steps on the quiz is greater than 70.
Reading Points can be earned up to a total of two times for each book. A book's Reading Point is marked on the book's cover or can be found on its Book Info page. Reading Points can only be earned if an average score of all the steps on the quiz is greater than 70.
For Level 1 books and lower, 100% of the points will be earned for the first time the quiz has been successfully completed. After this, only 50% of the total points can be earned each time the quiz has been successfully completed.
For books leveled 2 and above, 100% of the Reading Points can be earned when the quiz has been successfully completed on Full Mode. Only 50% of the Reading Points will be given when the quiz has been successfully completed on Easy Mode.
How do I use the Reading Points that I have earned?
Reading Points are used to Level Up, earn Reading Units, get inducted to the Reading Gate Hall of Fame, and other Reading Gate challenges.
Level Up See all the Level Up badges you have earned by going into the [Challenges] menu and clicking on [Level Master]. You can also see how many points are needed to Level Up to the next level by clicking on [Level Up Guide].
